Excellent news out of Utah!
This week, two crucial bills that would further protect children from the harms of gender ideology passed the Utah legislature and await Governor Spencer Cox’s signature.
The first bill, HB 174, closes a loophole in Utah’s existing prohibition on sex-rejecting medical procedures for minors. The bill would fully ban healthcare providers from providing cross-sex hormones to minors for the purpose of pediatric medical transition.
This further strengthens protections for minors and addresses gaps that had allowed certain sex-denying interventions to continue despite the state’s broader ban.
The second bill, HB258, is aimed at ensuring detransitioners have access to necessary medical care.
The legislation requires that insurance plans that cover procedures for the purpose of sex change also cover procedures to “reverse an individual’s sex transition.”
Governor Cox is expected to sign these bills and enact these essential protections.
As mentioned in our previous post on these bills, this legislative push follows a report by Do No Harm debunking a review of the evidence behind hormonal interventions for minors with gender dysphoria that was commissioned by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.
That study was intended to inform the Utah legislature’s approach to regulating child sex changes.
However, Do No Harm’s report explains how the Utah study misrepresents the literature and makes several key errors, such as failing to synthesize the evidence.
Do No Harm Action applauds the passage of these bills. This is a tremendous development for Utahns and a crucial step forward to combating the harms of gender ideology.
