Crucial Protections for Children Signed Into Law

Last week saw massive, massive developments: in multiple states, we’ve seen tremendous progress on bills aimed at protecting children from gender ideology and empowering parents.

First, in Utah, Governor Spencer Cox just signed two major pieces of legislation into law!

HB 174 builds on Utah’s existing restrictions on child sex change interventions, preventing healthcare professionals from providing minors cross-sex hormones. HB 258, meanwhile, requires insurance providers to cover detransition procedures if they also cover sex change procedures; this ensures detransitioners have access to necessary medical care.

And awaiting the governor’s signature is HB 259, which empowers parents to access their children’s medical records and health information. The bill requires healthcare facilities to provide parents with access to their child’s electronic health records and ensures electronic health record companies are providing Utah hospitals with systems that comply with these requirements.

This is an incredibly important piece of legislation: as Do No Harm has documented, preventing parents from being properly involved in their kids’ medical decisions opens the door for providers to push gender ideology.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, SB 1095 passed out of committee earlier last week. That bill prevents health professionals from not only providing “gender transition procedures” to any individual under the age of 18, but from referring minors to other health professionals for these harmful procedures.

Do No Harm Action’s Chloe Cole, who is herself a detransitioner, testified in support of the legislation.

Also in Arizona, SB 1094, which would make physicians who perform certain sex-denying surgical procedures on minors liable for damages, passed out of committee.

That bill also sets the statute of limitations for such lawsuits at 25 years after the minor turns 18. Do No Harm Action’s Dr. Travis Morrell lent his testimony in support of the bill.
