Protections for Children Move Closer to Becoming Law

This week, several important pieces of legislation in multiple states moved closer to becoming law. These bills would establish key protections for children against the harms of gender ideology.

In Florida, HB 743 passed out of committee. The bill would prohibit healthcare professionals from aiding and abetting other providers to perform sex-denying medical interventions on children. Additionally, it would empower the state’s attorney general to investigate and sue health care professionals who violate Florida law prohibiting these procedures.

Do No Harm Action’s January Littlejohn testified in support of this bill, explaining how healthcare providers may be circumventing existing restrictions on these interventions and why additional oversight like that provided by HB 743 is needed.

In Utah, HB 174, which had already passed in the state’s House of Representatives, passed out of committee in the Senate.

That bill would fully ban healthcare providers from providing cross-sex hormones to minors for the purpose of pediatric medical transition. Do No Harm Action’s Chloe Cole, who herself was a victim of the child transgender industry, and Dr. Kurt Miceli testified in favor of the bill, explaining the extreme harms associated with these procedures.

Moreover, the bill follows on the heels of a report by Do No Harm debunking a review of the evidence behind hormonal interventions for minors with gender dysphoria that was commissioned by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.

Do No Harm’s report explains how the Utah study misrepresents the literature and makes several key errors, such as failing to synthesize the evidence.

And in Arizona, two bills that would establish additional protections for minors against gender ideology moved closer to being law. Do No Harm Action’s Dr. Travis Morrell testified in support of these bills.

SB 1094 would make healthcare providers who perform sex-rejecting surgical procedures on minors civilly liable, meaning that children who endured these procedures could sue such providers for damages.

And SB 1014 would require insurance companies that provide coverage for pediatric medical transition services to also cover detransition procedures.

This protection is essential as it prevents children victimized by pediatric medical transition from being left in the lurch when they mature and regret undergoing these harmful interventions.

Do No Harm Action calls on lawmakers in Florida, Utah, and Arizona: turn these bills into laws.
